Tongariro update

It was freezing cold this morning, standing in the river waist deep for about 2 hours with Gore-Tex waders gave me a hypothermia :-) The fish tend to be moving quickly through the river again. One pool was holding more than 30 fish yesterday afternoon, but nobody home this morning.  Caught many dark fish, they took my flies in the fast current! Striking the fish 60~70 ft away and fighting with them is pretty exciting!!!! Imagine if I was using a 5 weight...!!??

Gosh, I love my life :-)))

Tongariro update

My new sword, TFO DC 7110-4 is sooo nice to sweep, easy enough to deliver big flies to the fish in Tongariro. I especially prefer to use this rod rather than the TCX 7119-4 in windy conditions(funny???), the sharp narrow loop will cut through the air and I never have to stop fishing. Believe it or not, Tongariro's famous strong south-westerly blast feels like a breeze with this rod :-))  480 grain head is OK but slightly lighter is better I think (all depends on the tip I use anyway).
Caught a lot of dark fish again, the river seems to be holding a lot of fish this week.

Tongariro update

A lot of fish in Blue and Sand pools.
Heaps of pumice still floating down, a school must have gone up the river in the weekend.
Half the fish I caught today were dark, which I haven`t seen many of in the last week.
Anyway, another nice day down there. Tie some more flies tonight, and get ready for another day:-)

Tongariro update

Beautiful sunny day on Tongariro.
My new sword is very nice to cast, and also surprisingly amazingly awesome to control the fish.
Perfect match with new 480 grain tip, capable to cast 70 ft effortlessly.
Caught so many fish again, my fly paterns are definetly spot on for clear-low water days.

However.....
I don't want to say this but.....I lost a big, big fish today.
I have never ever engaged with a fish that big, after she made the 1st big jump, I saw the fish and my hands started shaking. I got very nervous then 2 minutes later....shes gone.
I didn't do anything wrong, she was just about on the beach.
Well, must be one of those days and..... now there is a reason to go back and cast.

As I said, my new fly experiment is completed now and it's time to move on to something new again.
Don't worry, I already have a few ideas.

I'll be back on the river next week, until then I'll keep collecting browny points:-)

Tongariro report - respect, learn and get the jackpot!

The river is even lower, fish seem like they are reacting to certain patterns and colours of flies.
Always respect elders, they know where the fish are, just add our 21st century technology to catch them efficiently .... Even catching just a few fish this morning, I learned alot from them, it's like worth a 1000 fish :-)

They have already lived and fished 30 years longer than I have.

Gosh, life is too short...
